Honolulu Hawaii USA: HVCA LUNCHEON COMING SOON JUNE 25, 2009

DID THIS YEAR'S ENERGY LEGISLATION HELP LOCAL CLEAN ENERGY ENTREPRENEUERS?

Who was the legislature working for this year when it came to clean energy?

The goal has long been stated. Hawaii will be off imported oil by 2030 by at least 70%. But who will get the money? Who will get the long awaited "business friendly support"? For whom will all the red tape be cut? This year's legislature passed a host of clean energy initiatives, some baby steps to be taken, some giant strides, but ultimately who will get to the front of the line and be in the best position to work on major clean energy initiatives. We've heard it a 1,000 times, how Hawaii is a crucible for clean energy projects. We have great ideas coming out of the University of Hawaii, we have entrepreneurs like Darren Kimura, and other who have shown they can attract funding to do "out of the box" energy ideas. But did the legislature make sure that our own entrepreneurs will get a slice of the pie when it comes to weaning us off of oil?

The Hawaii Venture Capital Association has brought together a panel to take on this lively topic. Please join us to hear Representative Hermina Morita, Chair of the House Committee on Energy and Environment Protection, Jeff Mikulina, Executive Director of the Blue Planet Foundation founded by Henk Rogers, and Kelly King, Vice President of Pacific Biodiesel.

The Hawaii Venture Capital Association (HVCA) is committed to bringing it members friends high level discussions about Hawaii's goal of achieving energy independence by 2030. "Hawaii's strength in energy is its home grown entrepreneurs," said Bill Spencer, HVCA President. "We know we can import energy technology, but do we have the will to invest in our own 'energy entrepreneurs?"

This is expected to be a highly attended event. Please be sure to register as soon as possible.

Honolulu Hawaii Thursday, June 4, 2009: Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii Present:

“The Chinese are Coming, The Chinese are Coming” Paul Pei, Executive Director of Sales and Marketing, Ocean Park, Hong Kong

Mainland China is a massive market for the entire world. With a population of 1.3 billion, it has already proven its power in tourism, and this is only the beginning. Its citizens are eager to travel, to visit other cultures, and to experience what they have not been able to do. A Memorandum of Understanding between the US and China has opened the door for a potentially lucrative flow of visitors to Hawaii. But, are you ready to capture your share of this huge opportunity? Do you understand what their interests are, their sensitivity to price and quality, their expectations of service, how they behave, and more basically, how to reach and communicate with them?

Paul Pei is Executive Director of Sales and Marketing at Ocean Park Hong Kong, a marine animal theme park that served over 5 million visitors in 2008, of which approximately half were from mainland China. Raised in Honolulu, he has spent most of his career in the orient, for thirty years in the hotel business in Singapore and Hong Kong and the last nine years at Ocean Park. He has been intimately involved in attracting and serving the 2.5 million visitors from China that visited his park last year. Hong Kong in total welcomed 16.8 million visitors from China in 2008, which now represents the largest segment of Hong Kong’s thriving tourism industry. Mr. Pei will share their experiences and provide tips on how to welcome and serve these visitors, who now spend more per person per day on vacation here than our Japanese visitors.

Hong Kong SAR - Thursday - June 4th: New U.S. Administration: Facing Global Financial Challenges

William Daley, Vice Chairman, JPMorgan Chase, and Former U.S. Secretary of Commerce

When U.S. President Obama and China President Hu Jintao met at the G-20 summit, both leaders agreed to continue the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue. However, the issues around the dollar as the global reserve currency, China's holdings of $1 trillion in U.S. government and agency securities, and Renminbi convertibility, will require further discussion. Mr. William Daley, Vice Chairman of JPMorgan Chase and former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, will provide insights on the new administration's priorities with respect to China, and the implications for the global financial market.

Mr. Daley serves on the Operating Committee of JPMorgan - the company's senior leadership team - and on its International Council. He is also the Chairman of the JPMorgan Foundation. Daley joined JPMorgan Chase in May 2004, after serving as President of SBC Communications for three years. In 2008, he served as Co-Chair of the Obama Presidential Campaign, Co-Chair of the Transition Team after the election, and Co-Chairman of the Inauguration Committee. In 2000, he coordinated the effort for permanent Normal Trade Relations with China and chaired Vice President Al Gore's presidential campaign. Daley served as U.S. Secretary of Commerce and a member of the Cabinet, under President Clinton from 1997 to 2000. As Special Counsel to President Clinton in 1993, Daley coordinated the successful campaign to pass the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

While China’s real economy has been hit hard by the global crisis, it is still holding up, according to the World Bank’s latest China Quarterly Update. The update finds that China’s banks have been largely unscathed by the international financial turmoil and that the economy still has plenty of space to implement stimulus measures.

Professor Paul Yip will discuss how China will respond to the current economic situation. He will also discuss Hong Kong's economic and political development and his visions for building a new foundation for
International Studies.

A successful businessman and former Hong Kong politician, Professor Paul Yip Kwok-wah is Founder and Chairman of the Hong Kong Policy Research Institute, Chairman of the Hong Kong Basic Law Foundation,
and co-owns the Yew Chung International School.

He served as special adviser to the first chief executive of Hong Kong, Tung Chee-hua, and was recently appointed as the new Honorary President of the China Foundation for International Studies. Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce - 2009 Business Solutions Workshop Series Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii - Manoa Grand Ballroom, 5th Floor

Proposed legislation affecting Federal and State laws governing the union-employer relationship will likely be passed by Congress and the Hawaii State Legislature. The federal ‘Card Check’ legislation is known as the Employee Choice Act. The State counterparts have been introduced in the 2009 legislative session as HB 952, HB 1769 and SB 1621. Both the Federal and State legislation make it much easier for unions to organize a workplace, perhaps even without an employer’s knowledge. Such legislation is often referred to as ‘Card Check’ bills because the measures eliminate the secret ballot election.

Learn what the ‘Card Check’ legislation will mean for your company in this seminar that is being presented by experts from the Hawaii Employers Council. The speakers are Clayton Kamida, Corporate Secretary & General Counsel and Sheri-Ann Lau Clark, Sr. HR Consultant & Assistant General Counsel.

This workshop would be most helpful for owners, managers and supervisors, especially of employers with a non-union workforce or who may have a partially unionized workforce.

Have you heard about the sweeping law changes being proposed?
Want to learn more about the fundamentals of unions?
Want a checklist of how to better address your employees needs?

Honolulu Hawaii - Friday - March 20th 4:30pm - Confucius Institute at the University of Hawai‘i at Mänoa 2009 Public Lecture Series - co-sponsored by Hong Kong.China.Hawaii Chamber of Commerce (HKCHcc)

Presents

Yuan-tsung Chen, Author and writer

“The Contribution by Overseas Chinese to the Birth of Modern China”

Chen will speaking on the way in which overseas Chinese, particularly those in Hawai‘i, contributed to the birth of modern China by supporting the 1911 Revolution, led by Sun Yat-sen and his followers; introducing the best of Western democratic ideas to the Chinese people; and forging friendly relations between the U.S.A. and China.

Friday, March 20, 4:30 p.m.
Center for Korean Studies Auditorium
University of Hawai‘i at Mänoa
1881 East-West Road

The talk will be followed by a reception and a book signing.

Yuan-tsung Chen was born in Shanghai. Her middle-class family lived on the edge of the district of the city comprising the French Concession and the British- and American-dominated International Settlement. She was educated mainly in American missionary schools. As an adult, Chen worked in Beijing’s Film Publishing House as an editor and translator before coming to USA in 1972. Chen’s most recent book, Return to the Middle Kingdom: One Family, Three Revolutionaries, and the Birth of Modern China, recounts the story of three generations of a remarkable family. Through this lens she relates the overseas Chinese. This is a connection that is worth emphasizing, and Chen’s popular history breaks new ground in our understanding of those momentous events and the Chinese diaspora. Chen is also the author of The Dragon’s Village, an autobiographical novel that deals with China’s land revolution. It was first published by Pantheon in 1980, and then brought out in paperback by Penguin USA in 1981. Many schools use it as required reading in courses in literature, history, sociology, political science, women’s and minority studies, and Chinese Studies. For more information on Yuan-tsung Chen, please visit her website at
www.yuantsungchen.com

A limited number of Chen’s latest book will be available for sale at the event for $15/copy—cash only.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Hawai‘i at Mänoa is a part of the University’s Center for Chinese Studies. For further information on this talk, please contact Daniel Tschudi at 956-8891, or e-mail:

A panel of some of Hawaii's most experienced Angel investors will be the guests of the Hawaii Venture Capital Association at its February 26, 2009 luncheon meeting at the Plaza Club. This is a must attend event for entrepreneurs and management teams of start-up companies seeking early stage financing. Angel investors nationwide have put more money into early stage companies than professional venture capital firms. They are virtually the only source of start-up capital for new companies and offer entrepreneurs a strong partnership when it comes to winding your way through the venture finance continuum.

The Hawaii Angels, was founded by Rob Robinson in February 2002 and is in its seventh year. As a group the Hawaii Angels have invested in more than 40 companies all of which are still in business. Its track record is one of the best in the country according to the National Angel Capital Association.

Hawaii Angels is the state's only network of experienced qualified investors with chapters on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. The group now has 100 plus members who hold monthly meetings where entrepreneurs get a chance to pitch their bu siness plans.

HVCA has invited Hawaii Angels founder Rob Robinson and angels Steven Baker and Shan Steinmark to share their wisdom about angel investing, what entrepreneurs need to know to attract an angel investor, do's and don'ts as well as other important topics such as Act 221, investor relations, company structure, and other things that angels look for in a good early stage investment.

Attendees will learn how to get in front of the Angels, what makes a good pitch and other important tips. "This may be one of our most important meetings this year," said Bill Spencer, HVCA President. "Angel investors are typically very private so we are lucky that these knowledgeable investors are sharing their experience with us," he said. "So don't miss this important event."

This meeting will be held: The Plaza Club 20th Floor 11:30am-1:30pm

$29 for HVCA, HTDC, Hawaii Angels, Dual Use Council, Tech Hui, Bytemarks and HSTC Members, $39 non-members, $25 students.
